Bringing Bill’s Attic to Life: A New Storybook by Falmouth Graduates
Working with the Knowledge and Exchange team at Falmouth University. We invited graduates Chloe Eathorne, Gem Steves and Pip Latham-Mollart to become residents in Bill’s Attic and they spent this time writing, illustrating and designing this storybook. We have noticed that there is a huge opportunity for us down the road at Falmouth, one of the country’s foremost creative universities and we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to stay and work in the creative industries in Cornwall.
After three weeks they had co-authored this story of Elowyn the frog which captures the eccentricity of Bill’s Attic and the personality of its objects.

Tales From The Attic: A Runaway Star is the debut collaboration of Chloe Eathorne (writer), Pip Latham-Mollart (illustrator), and Gemma Stevens (graphic designer), all recent graduates of Falmouth University. The project grew from The Ladder x Falmouth Creative Entrepreneurship residency, a programme designed to help graduates launch freelance careers while embedding themselves in Cornwall’s vibrant arts community, supporting the cultural revival of Redruth.
The trio’s creative process began inside Bill’s Attic, the legendary workspace of late theatre-maker Bill Mitchell (founder of WildWorks and artistic director of Kneehigh). Bill left behind not just a legacy, but a space filled with objects and memories, rich with the heritage of Cornish storytelling. Immersed in this unique environment, the creators were inspired to craft an original story that honors Bill’s legacy of the power of collaboration and community storytelling.
“Being able to work with such a dedicated and vibrant team has been a wonderful graduate experience and The Ladder’s dynamic working space allowed a really lovely flow of independent and shared work throughout the internship, fostering a comfortable creative environment.”
“We wanted to capture the magic of Bill’s Attic — not just the physical space, but the feeling that stories are waiting in every corner and object to be discovered”
“The workspace of Bill’s attic is truly a landscape of mysterious inspirations. It provided me with a creative awakening by allowing me to play with such unusual surroundings; the Ladders’ upcoming reinvigoration of the space excites me as I’m sure it will be a hive of artistic activity in the heart of Redruth.”
