It’s not long until Murdoch Day…
Back in the 1990s, the people of Redruth decided it was high time they had a festival to rival their neighbours in Camborne. After all, Camborne had been celebrating Trevithick Day since 1984, even though **spoiler alert** Trevithick never lived there. He actually lived in Redruth!
So, what did Redruth do? We launched our own answer: Murdoch Day. Named after William Murdoch, the Scotsman who invented the first house lit by gas lighting (yes, before it became a whole different kind of ‘gaslighting’!). Murdoch lived in Redruth for just 16 years, more than 200 years ago, but his legacy is still alive and well. We get the rivalry with Camborne (it’s been brewing for centuries!), but honestly, don’t you think it’s time we started something a bit more… revolutionary?
The world has changed a lot in the past 200 years, and so have the things we celebrate. These days, it’s not just about big historical events - it’s about the everyday heroes who make Redruth really special. The lollipop people out in all weathers, making sure our kids get to school safely. The volunteers at Kresen Kernow, preserving our history for future generations. The friendly neighbour who always greets you with a smile. These small acts may not always make the headlines, but they’re what make this place extraordinary.
So, why not join us in celebrating them? The mums, dads, teachers, dog-walkers, hairdressers, rugby players - and everyone else who quietly, or not so quietly, makes a huge difference in our lives. This is your invitation to be part of a revolution, a celebration of the people who really make Redruth what it is.
This Saturday, we won’t be sharing the photos just yet, but we are capturing them, gathering the faces of the movement. We’ll also be plotting our place in the Murdoch Day parade, getting ready for our turn to take the streets. Come along, join the conversation, get your picture taken, and become part of something that’s bigger than all of us. A revolution in the making. Trust us, you won’t want to miss it!
