Shakespeare in Shoreditch
In 2014 and 2016 we created a festival to celebrate Shakespeare’s historic connection to Hoxton.
Children from our neighbouring estates had visited our shop during our O Brave New World project; many of them lived in places with familar names: The Arden Estate, Caliban Tower, Miranda House. From this we learned that Shakespeare lived and worked in Hoxton and established his first theatres The Curtain and The Theatre just 100 metres from where we were performing his last work.
We were shocked not more people knew this to we commissioned fourteen writers including Thomas McMullan, Brad Birch, Ali Muriel, Abi Zakarian, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Sebastian Baczkiewicz, Hattie Naylor, Tobias Wright, Nick Coupe, Sabrina Mahfouz, Katie Lambert & James Soldan to write new plays based around Shakespeare’s plays and iconic Hoxton Street locations.
They were then performed in those locations.
You can see films about each play below and read about Annie’s 1000 Plays another project which featured in Shakespeare in Shoreditch here.
