The Window in the Shape of a Cloud
Our building is 130 years old this year! It was designed by James Hicks, an architect born in Redruth, who created many of the town’s most well-known and much-loved buildings.
James Hicks had a unique style. He combined different types of Victorian architecture, including Gothic, Jacobean and Renaissance. Our building is a great example – with its decorative gables, detailed stonework and use of local materials. It was built to last – and to stand out.
Upcoming Events…
One of its most curious features can be seen from the street – a window shaped like a cloud. Set into the outer wall of The Ladder, it’s a playful and surprising detail, typical of James Hicks’ imaginative style. It sparks the imagination and invites us to wonder what stories the building might hold.
The Window in the Shape of a Cloud is a creative project that invites children and young people to explore the hidden magic of Redruth’s former Library and College buildings – now known as The Ladder. We'll take a closer look at the parts people often miss, and discover new ideas, spaces and stories through young eyes.
The project has three imaginative strands:
The Dolls’ House of the Dolls’ House – a miniature version of the Library building, filled with handmade surprises, stories, and creative details inspired by the people and features inside The Ladder.
The Cloud Mobile – a colourful hanging sculpture near the entrance, designed to spark curiosity and creativity as soon as you walk through the door. Transporting you into another world.
The Ladder in a Day – a giant cardboard sculpture made together in one day, built from photographs taken by young people of their favourite corners and features from inside the building.
This project is all about imagination, place and community. It’s a chance for young people to connect with the history of The Ladder, celebrate what makes it special, and bring new life to the stories hidden in its walls.
Come and join us as we climb through the cloud-shaped window – and see Redruth in a whole new way.
