REDRUTH FOR UK TOWN OF CLUTRE 2028 #druth28
We’re really excited to share that Redruth has officially announced its bid to become UK Town of Culture 2028 and The Ladder is proud to be one of the partners helping lead the bid, alongside Redruth Town Council and the Redruth Cultural Consortium.
The bid celebrates Redruth’s rich heritage, creative energy, and strong community spirit, positioning culture as a catalyst for pride, opportunity, and long-term regeneration. If successful, Redruth would deliver a £3.5 million programme of cultural activity in Spring/Summer 2028, showcasing local talent while attracting national attention, investment, and visitors.
A former industrial town with a population of 15,626, Redruth sits at the heart of a wider area of 42,690 people across surrounding mining villages, making it the most populous area in Cornwall. Once known as the richest square mile in the UK, the town experienced significant change following the closure of its mines and brewery in the 1990s. Today, culture, heritage, and creativity are driving a new chapter.
The opening of landmark institutions including Kresen Kernow, Krowji and The Buttermarket has helped spark a cultural renaissance: one that places Redruth firmly on the national map.
Despite its size, Redruth punches well above its weight. It is home to the largest artist studio complex west of Bristol, the third-largest hub for digital businesses in the UK, and the UK’s largest heritage archive project. The town boasts a much-loved cinema and theatre, Cornwall’s largest creative employer, and hosts half of Cornwall’s Arts Council National Portfolio Organisations. Crucially, artists continue to be drawn to Redruth as the most affordable place in Cornwall to live and work.
Redruth is also one of the places where Cornish identity remains strongest. It is home to the Lowender Festival, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2028, alongside quarterly festivals including the International Mining and Pasty Festival and Murdoch Day, celebrations of food, mining, and innovation rooted in place.
The bid aims to share Redruth’s rich and complex story with the rest of the UK, highlighting the town’s national significance and placing local people at the heart of shaping its cultural future.
