We are Redruth
Each year, on a Saturday in June, the people of Redruth gather to celebrate William Murdoch; a Scotsman born in Ayrshire in 1754, who lived in the town for just 16 years.
Why?
Because he invented gas lighting.

But did he even consider himself a Redruthian? He lived to the age of 85, more than twice the average lifespan at the time, so his years in Redruth made up less than a fifth of his life.
Now, 233 years after his scientific breakthrough, surely we can think of someone, or something, more deserving of our admiration?
Do the figures we celebrate still have to be those whose achievements seem most attainable by dead, white, middle-class, middle-aged men? Does London have a Tim Berners-Lee Day? Does High Wycombe cheer for Russell Hobbs? Are we only interested in inventors from centuries past?
Perhaps it’s time to ask ourselves:
Who and what do we want to celebrate in Redruth?
Whose stories from the past should we be telling?
And whose stories from the present must we ensure are preserved for the future?
That’s where you come in. After all - We Are Redruth!
We want to hear from as many people as possible, those who live in Redruth and the surrounding areas. We’ve got a whole range of events lined up, from flag-making and a radio show to full-on revolt!
Book onto one of our events, or follow us on our socials, to find out how you can get involved.
